This song was actually written fairly long ago, in 2001, but wasn’t recorded till the second Numinous worship CD “Lullabies for the Awakening” in 2006. I wrote this song in honor of my sister, Tina. The lyrics are below, but in those, I wrote about how much fun she is and how she has constantly encouraged me.

The idea of encouragement is critical to a life Lived Well.  Today, at my church, we talked about this very concept when we studied the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi.  In that letter, Paul wrote about how he was encouraged by his friend Timothy and a new friend from the church, Epaphroditus.  Paul wrote that Epaphroditus actually came near death in his efforts to encourage Paul while the apostle was in prison.  The song tries to express, in a fun way, that each of us needs someone to inspire us, to help us keep singing as we go along the way.

If you listen (or read) closely you’ll see hints of good childhood fun including how to get to Peter Pan’s world. That aspect touches on how my daughters have equally been an encouragement to me. When I feel down or worried or frustrated, I watch them play or listen to their giggles. You’ll hear those giggles in the opening measures and yes, that is two of my girls (Brynn and Meryn).

The final connection in the song is my church, Numinous. For 15 years now, a small devoted group of friends have communed together, through joys and sadness. Each of them helps to keep believing, as the last verse exclaims.

Behind it all, and inferred in the chorus, is my love for Jesus Christ. He is my Lord and Savior and his presence I do embrace. His love was taught and demonstrated to my sister and me by my loving parents. So, my sister took care of me and taught me tons. My sister is definitely a shooting star and someone who has helped me find my voice to sing.

You’re a shooting star across a darkened sky
Shining brighter than the ones afraid to fly
Dancing, twirling spinnin’ round
Playing hopscotch with the moon, and me

You’re my happy thought when I need to fly
We’re adding memories to the list—it’s a mile high.
I’m circling the morning star
Don’t think I’m coming down, feel the glee

Sunshine brightens my face
I feel the grace of your caress
Sweet smell of your love fills the room
Your presence I embrace.

You’re a flittin’ butterfly across the sky
You’re showing others they’ll reach their dreams if they try.
You helped me believe. You helped me
Find my voice to sing, so sing with me.

Dancing, twirling spinnin’ round
Playing hopscotch with the moon, and me
