“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie–deliberate, contrived, and dishonest–but the myth–persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.”
Over the past few years, one concept that has become more understood by me is that people create their own narrative, or as JKF says, own myth about things. Once someone has created their own narrative, their own myth, about a situation, it is very difficult to convince them otherwise, even if you have the facts on your side. Thus, one critical aspect of leadership and community is to ensure that everyone is working with words and ideas where you have shared meaning, and, as the leader, you consistently root out anyone creating their own narrative to events.
