My faith journey, pt. 1

British author C.S. Lewis described his faith journey as being Surprised by Joy. It’s a nice touch and reflective of how he got to God.  I suppose my journey would be called “disappointed by religion.”  Perhaps its just my Gen-X-ness, full on upset with the lies of the machine, and disgruntled with the way society has turned out while we were children in the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s.

In any case, while I was fortunate to be raised in a “family of faith,” the child of a third generation pastor, that sort of “life on the inside” ultimately had a negative impact on my spiritual life.

Last week I posted an open attestation to my Christian faith and deep love of Jesus Christ.  I am unashamedly a Christian at a time when the USA has moved closer and closer to an anti-Christian viewpoint.  Many, then, assume that since my parents were/are devout Christians, that I just blindly accepted the same faith.  Then, those critics reason, it is easy to dismiss someone like me because, well, clearly I have no brain and was easily swayed.

The truth is far, far different.  This is critical, I believe, because with my intent in this blog and in all that I do in my adult life (as a speaker and as a professor) is to try and share how to live life well.  My book proclaims that I have answered 77 critical questions of college students and that those answers will help them find Success for Life. If, however, you reject my ideas because I am a Christian and you define me as someone who has just blindly accepted this faith, then you won’t listen.  If, on the other hand, I hide my faith from you, then I am disingenuous.

In the coming weeks, I plan to share a more in-depth story of my journey to the deep, some would say radical, expression of my Christian faith.  I hope you will come along and feel free to post comments or questions below.
