I remember returning from seeing the new Alice in Wonderland
When we walked into the theater, the ticket taker announced, “let me guess which movie you are going to see.” Of course, no one else was as boldly dressed, but everyone watched them, smiled and secretly wished that they could be just as original.
What about you? Are you that daring? Sure, maybe you don’t need to put on black and red lipstick or have hearts around your eyes, but are you willing to live your life taking courageous advantage of every opportunity?
That point was precisely what the movie praised; not letting others define you or box you in. At one point, Alice boldly protests against what others were demanding of her by exclaiming, “this is my dream!” She was making the point that she was going to do what she believed strongly she should do. YES!
What is your dream? Are you going for it? Or, have you let someone else determine what your dream should be? Are you using your time to develop your skills? If you have a job, are you allowing yourself to be trapped by supposed limitations, or are you looking at every day as a chance to stretch and creatively approach your job?
I’m not suggesting that you blow off your work or refuse to do what is required by your boss. Neither am I telling you, as a student, to refuse to do what is assigned to you by the professor. But I am urging you to live well. That happens as you live each day full, creatively and boldly.
Maybe you need to put on some consider dressing up silly for a movie. Or, at least consider signing up for that class that you’ve always wanted to take, even if its not in your prescribed list of approved courses. Don’t be afraid to take a risk.
It’s your life…you only get one go-around. Make the most of it!!

I totally agree that you should be willing to live life to the fullest but I also believe that we must be cognizant of the thoughts and opinions of those around us. Be willing to take a stand and stand firm on your beliefs but do not feel that you should “spit in the eye” of public opinion. Unfortunately public opinion is often shaped by our appearance, including clothing, body art and piercings. I know many people who proceed with total disregard to public opinion in these areas and then cannot understand why they can’t find a job. I spent many years teaching employability skills and many of my students had trouble understanding why they didn’t “get the job” when they had gone to the interview in tee shirt and frayed jeans. Through the years I have talked to many Human Resource directors and they continually tell me that appearance is one of the main factors in determining who gets the job and who doesn’t. The fact still remains that being willing to take a stand and take a risk does not free one from the responsibility to conform to certain public standards as we enter the world of work. Be willing to take a risk but understand that there are still limits that we must be aware of if we want to survive in the public sector.
